【ペルー大地震・第２報】 ペルー・イカ市発 ｜15日夕刻に発生したペルー大地震から一夜明けた木曜朝も、いまだに余震が続いているが、救援隊や被災者の遺族は、激震で崩壊した家屋や教会の瓦礫の中から犠牲者を掘り起こす作業に必死である。今回の被害状況は、現時点では死者355名、負傷者1500名が確認されているが、現地に入った赤十字からの報告では、犠牲者の数はさらに増えるものと想定されている。

1. Ica, city of epicenterThe center of the destruction was in Peru’s southern desert, in the oasis city of Ica and the nearby port of Pisco, about 125 miles southeast of the capital, Lima. Pisco’s mayor said at least 200 people were buried in the rubble of a church where they had been attending a service. In Ica, a city of 120,000 near the epicenter, a fourth of the buildings collapsed, at least 57 bodies were brought to the morgue and injured parents and children crowded into a hospital where they waited for attention on cots. Several Ica churches also were damaged, including the historic Senor de Luren church. Cable news station Canal N said 17 people were killed inside one.
震源地に近いイカ市の惨状

2. 15 aftershocks followed M8.0
The earthquake hit at 6:40 p.m. about 90 miles southeast of Lima at a depth of about 19 miles, when one of the region’s two constantly shifting plates dove under the other quickly, according to Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. The earthquake’s magnitude was raised from 7.9 to 8 on Thursday by the U.S. Geological Survey. At least 15 aftershocks followed, some as strong as magnitude-6.3. The U.S. State Department said that at least one American had been killed in the quake. It wasn't known whether the person was traveling through the country or living there.
15回以上の余震で眠れぬ被災者
今回の地震は、ペルー現地時間で15日木曜の午後6時40分に、首都リマ市の南東90マイル (約145キロ) 深さ19マイル (30.5キロ) の地点で発生。コロラド州ゴールデンにある国立地震情報センター＝National Earthquake Information Centerの地質物理学者のエイミー・ヴォーン女史の解説によると、この地域の地下にはふたつの活断層プレート＝constantly shifting platesが走っており、両方が急激にスライドしたことにより地震が起きたものと見られている。
木曜の段階では、USGS 米国地理調査研究所＝U.S. Geological Survey によって、地震の震度が当初発表されたマグニチュード7.9から8.0へと引き上げられた。また15日夜から翌朝にかけて、少なくとも15回以上の体感できる余震が続き、最大のものはマグニチュード6.3にも及んだ。米国国務省＝U.S. State Department の発表によると、今回の地震で、少なくとも１名のアメリカ人が犠牲となった。犠牲者が旅行者か現地居住者かという詳細はわかっていない。
The scope of the destruction became more evident as the frigid dawn broke, revealing thick stone and masonry walls in piles around the region. The quake knocked out telephone and mobile phone service between the capital and the disaster zone. Electricity also was cut, with power lines drooping dangerously into the streets.
The government rushed police, soldiers, doctors and aid to the area, but traffic was paralyzed by giant cracks and fallen power lines on the Panamerican Highway south of Lima. Large boulders also blocked Peru’s Central Highway to the Andes mountains. Rescue flights from Colombia and Panama were being prepared, but it wasn’t immediately clear when they could arrive.
一夜明けて被害甚大明らかに

ペルー政府では、被災地に警察・軍隊・医師団・救援隊を急遽派遣したが、リマ南部へ向かうパンアメリカン・ハイウェイには大きな亀裂が入り、道路脇の電線が垂れ下がったりしているために、交通もマヒしている。またアンデス山地へ向かうペルーの中央ハイウェイも、巨大な落石などで不通となっている。コロンビアとパナマでは、救援用の飛行機をチャーターして待機しているが、両機がいつごろ現地に到着できるのかは現在のところ不明である。
In Chincha, a small town 20 miles north of Pisco, an AP Television News cameraman counted 30 bodies under bloody sheets on a patio of the badly damaged hospital. About 200 people were waiting to be treated in walkways and gardens, kept outside for fear that aftershocks could topple the cracked walls. “Our services are saturated and half of the hospital has collapsed,” Dr. Huber Malma said as he single-handedly attended to dozens of people.
余震で崩壊の恐れ

Chincha looked as if it had been bombed. Large areas were completely leveled; dozens of homes made with adobe bricks had collapsed. Townspeople picked through the rubble of their homes, wrapped in sheets that made them look like ghosts in the early dawn. "We don't know what to do. I don't know where to hold a wake for her ... The wall just came down and crushed her when I was outside," Jose Flores, a 12-year-old boy said as he stood near the body of his dead mother outside their destroyed adobe home in Chincha.
完璧に瓦解した家屋
チンチャの町は、まるで爆撃にでもあったかのような破壊の爪痕を見せている。煉瓦の内壁の上を漆喰で塗り固めたアドビ様式の家屋がものの見事に地面に押しつぶされ、かなりの区域にわたって爆心地のように平坦になっている。住民は家々の瓦礫の中から犠牲となった遺体を掘り起こし、シーツでくるんで地面に横たえているので、明け方のまだ薄暗い光の中では、それはまるで幽霊のように見えなくもない。
「何をどうしたらいいかわからない。どこへ連れて行けば助かるのかわからなかった。僕はそのとき家の外にいたんだけど、地震で壁が崩れて、お母さんはその下敷きになってしまった。」12才の少年ホセ・フローレスは、崩れ落ちたアドビの家の残骸を前にして、亡くなった母親の遺体の傍らに立ち尽くしたまま、こう語った。
The Peruvian Red Cross arrived in Ica and Pisco 7½ hours after the initial quake, about three times as long as it would normally have taken because of road damage, said Red Cross official Giorgio Ferrario. He said he expects the death toll to climb. “The dead are scattered by the dozens on the streets,” Pisco Mayor Juan Mendoza told Lima radio station CPN. “We don’t have lights, water, communications. Most houses have fallen. Churches, stores, hotels — everything is destroyed,” the mayor said, sobbing.
道路・連絡網分断が救援活動を妨害
ペルーの赤十字がイカとピスコへたどりついたのは、最初の地震が発生してから７時間半も経ったあとだった。赤十字職員のジョルジオ・フェラリオ氏が語るところでは、道路損壊のおかげで、通常の３倍の時間を要したためという。彼の見るところでは、死亡者の数はもっと増えるだろうと推測している。

In Lima, about 95 miles from the epicenter, only one death was recorded, and some homes collapsed. But the furious two minutes of shaking prompted thousands of people to flee into the streets and sleep in public parks for safety. John Ortman, a resident of Southern California who is in Lima, told MSNBC.com's First Person that the quake was so strong it almost knocked him off his feet. “We watched the buildings move like cards,” he said, adding that he and his companions heard people screaming and crying.
「トランプのようにしなる建物」

南カリフォルニアの住民でたまたまリマ市に滞在中だったジョン・オートマン氏は、MSNBC.comの視聴者からの情報掲出ページ『First Person』上で、地震があまりにも激しかったので、ほとんど立てない状態だったと投稿している。「目の前の建物が、まるでトランプのカードのようにしなりました。」彼と連れの仲間には、中から人々が泣き叫んでいるのが聞えたと付け加えていた。
Maria Pilar Mena, a sandwich vendor in Lima, said it was “the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt. When the quake struck, I thought it would never end.” Antony Falconi was desperately trying to get public transportation home as hundreds of people milled on the streets flagging down buses in the dark. “Who isn’t going to be frightened?” Falconi said. “The earth moved differently this time. It made waves and the earth was like jelly.” President Alan Garcia also said public schools would be closed Thursday because the buildings may be unsafe.体験者談「ゼリーのように揺れ動く大地」
リマ市の屋台でサンドイッチを売っているマリア・ピラール・メナさんは、地震の体験を次のように語っている。「今まで体験した地震の中で、いちばんすごかったです。地震が襲った時は、もうこのまま終わらないんじゃないかと思いました。」
会社からの帰路、灯りもなく暗い路上でなんとか帰宅しようと、バスに向かって必死に手をふったりして公共の交通機関に乗り込もうとしている何百人もの通勤客のひとり、アントニー・ファルコニさんは、こう体験談を話す。「いったい誰が怖くないなんて思うもんですか。今回は地面がまるっきり違う動きをしましたよ。地面はまるでゼリーでできているように揺れて、波のようにうねりました。」
一方、ペル−のアラン・ガルシア大統領は、建物が安全でないことを懸念して、全ての公立学校を16日木曜日休校にすると発表した。
